A statement from the Somali Ministry of Information has detailed a heavy airstrike that was carried out last night in the Aden Yabaal district of the Middle Shabelle region against members of the Al-Shabaab group.

The airstrike was carried out jointly by government forces and the US AFRICOM, with the aim of eliminating the Al-Shabaab group, which took control of the city of Aden Yabaal yesterday.

The statement from the Somali government stated that the airstrike specifically targeted a gathering place of the group, killing 12 members including militias and leaders of the group.

The statement from the Ministry of Information also stated that there were no civilian casualties in the airstrike operation.

“The national army and the AFRICOM operation are still assessing the losses suffered by the enemy. Any further details from the operations, which are ongoing, will be communicated to you at any time,” the statement said.

The airstrike follows heavy fighting that took place yesterday in the strategic district of Aden Yabaal in the Middle Shabelle region against Al-Shabaab.
