After 54 years, Somalia officially joined the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday, having already been elected as a non-permanent member for 2025-2026, and began its term.
Somalia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Abukar Dahir Osman (Abukar Baalle) said in a brief statement, “We are committed to upholding the United Nations Charter, and we are dedicated to maintaining international peace and security.”
Somalia has become one of the 15 members of the Security Council, especially the 10 non-permanent members. It will represent East Africa in this seat for a period of two years starting on January 1, 2025. – which was due yesterday until the end of the year 2026.
Somalia first became a member of the United Nations in 1960.
This position was chosen in June of the year we passed in 2024, and at the same time yesterday the Security Council joined the countries of Pakistan, Panama, Denmark and Greece.
