The African Union Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) has announced that it has launched an investigation into a murder that took place in Buulo Mareer district on July 17, 2024. The incident resulted in the death of two people and the wounding of another.
ATMIS has admitted to the allegations that its forces have deliberately killed civilians, and has promised to conduct an extensive investigation, and will present the results of the investigation when it is completed.
“We send our deepest condolences to the bereaved families. ATMIS forces are trained to strictly adhere to International Humanitarian Law, Human Rights Standards, and Rules of Engagement governing military operations, with an emphasis on protecting civilians and children,” ATMIS said in a news release.
The investigation comes after reports emerged that Ugandan troops belonging to ATMIS killed three civilians, who were farmers in Buulo Mareer area of Lower Shabelle region, about 120 km to the south. the capital of Mogadishu.
This incident caused angry demonstrations in Buulo Mareer and Mogadishu, as the demonstrators demanded that justice be brought to justice for those behind the act. The dead people are taking their bodies to Mogadishu, and it is said that they have not been buried yet.
ATMIS has assured the public that the investigation will be complete and impartial, and appropriate measures will be taken based on the results.
