Somalia has been elected to be part of the United Nations Security Council for a period of two years starting from 2025-2026.
It is the first time in 52 years that Somalia has won a non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council.
Somalia was elected in a secret ballot at the United Nations General Assembly, receiving 179 votes.
Somalia was the only candidate from the East African countries, and was fully supported by the African Union before the election.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Ahmed Macallin Fiqi, speaking about Somalia’s success, said that Somalia’s diplomatic efforts have borne fruit, and Somalia’s relentless commitment to international peace.
Ambassador Ahmed Macallin Fiqi said that Somalia will play a major role in major decisions affecting the world and the direction of international politics and security.
The minister thanked the countries that voted for Somalia to get a seat in the Security Council.
