Senator Jim Risch, a senior member of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, urged the Biden administration to deal with Somaliland.

Jim Risch said that Somalia’s politics alone do not reflect the reality.

“I urged the United States Department of State to work with Somaliland and not ignore democratic progress,” said Senator Risch, adding that his American colleagues praised the progress of Somaliland’s elections.

His speech came after the European Union, Denmark, Germany, Norway, Sweden, and the UK welcomed the official announcement of the Somaliland Elections.

Senator Jim Risch, said that there is a need for the world to work with the Somaliland Electoral Commission and all election stakeholders to support the delivery of free and fair elections for all.

The United States recognizes Somaliland as a part of Somalia, although it cooperates with Somaliland on political issues such as democratization and economic development.
