The Italian government is donating six armored vehicles from the country’s military police force, the Carabinieri, to Somalia, worth more than 170,000 euros.
The transfer of these vehicles was announced in a draft decree issued by the Italian Ministry of Defense and approved by the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committees of both houses of the Italian Parliament.
The vehicles to be donated to Somalia are VM-90P vehicles, which Italy says have been withdrawn from service with the Carabinieri due to their age and high maintenance costs, as well as their limited operational capabilities.
According to the report, these vehicles are being gradually replaced with new VTLM Lince vehicles, which are considered more efficient and safer.
The six vehicles are being transferred to Somalia free of charge, and their total value is estimated at more than 170,000 euros.
The Italian Ministry of Defense said that this transfer will not entail any additional costs for the country’s defense budget.
Italy has previously donated military and security equipment to Somalia. In 2025, Somalia received equipment worth nearly 50 thousand euros, including riot control equipment, military uniforms and equipment, office equipment and hygiene supplies.
There is also another donation of equipment of a similar value that is still awaiting approval.
