Former Puntland forces who later joined the Federal Government of Somalia left military camps in northern Galkayo last night, according to sources.

The forces are said to have headed towards Galgaduud region after receiving information that Puntland could take military action if they do not leave their area within a short period of time.

Traditional elders met with the officers of the forces, discussing whether they should return to Puntland or move from Puntland areas to areas controlled by the Federal Government of Somalia.

Sources say the forces will join the camps of the Federal Government’s Danab forces, although it is not yet known whether they will return to Galkayo.

The move came a day after Puntland forces took over the PSF camp in Galkayo, looting weapons and combat vehicles that the PSF forces fled from there.

Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni, who welcomed the operation, sent a message to other forces working with the Federal Government in Puntland, calling on them to immediately hand over their weapons and troops to the government.

Following the Puntland President’s speech, there is a sense of alertness at the facilities where forces affiliated with the Federal Government are located inside Puntland.
