The Election Committee for the Speaker of the House of the People of the Federal Parliament of Somalia has announced the official schedule for the election of the Speaker of the House of the People, with the registration of candidates seeking the position beginning.
A press release from the committee stated that the registration of candidates will begin at Villa Hargeisa on August 5 and 6, 2026, while the speeches of the candidates are scheduled for August 8, and the debate will take place on August 9.
The election of the Speaker of the House of the People will be held on August 10, 2026.
The committee also announced that a candidate running for the position of Speaker of the House of the People is required to pay $30,000, and if the candidate running for the Speaker of the House of the People is a woman, $15,000 is required, with the funds being deposited into the account of the House of the People at the Central Bank of Somalia.
According to the requirements issued, the candidate must be a member of the House of the People and not less than 35 years of age.
They are also required to be Somali citizens with Somali parents, not to have any other nationality or to declare that they will renounce it if elected, and to provide a letter of confirmation from the General Auditorium.
Candidates are also required to submit their application, curriculum vitae (CV), a copy of their parliamentary ID, two photographs and a letter of proof of payment of the registration fee.
This election comes as the House of the People prepares to elect a new speaker, as part of the leadership reform of the Federal Parliament of Somalia.
