The African Union Peace and Security Council has urged the Federal Government of Somalia to strengthen inclusive dialogue with member states and other stakeholders, to strengthen political unity and efforts to stabilize the country.
A statement issued by the African Union Peace and Security Council said that the differences and misunderstandings within the country’s administration are hindering the fight against Al-Shabaab and are delaying efforts to build a sustainable state.
The Peace and Security Council called for the establishment of an open, transparent and inclusive consultation process that reflects the interests of all political parties in the country.
The statement said that close cooperation between the federal government and state governments is essential to ensure security, implement institutional reforms, and advance the state-building process.
It also encouraged all stakeholders to demonstrate political compromise and self-respect, in order to reach a national agreement that leads to lasting stability and unity.
The statement from the African Union Peace Council comes as talks are expected to begin in Mogadishu between the Federal Government of Somalia and the Somali Future Council to reach an agreement on the country’s upcoming elections and amendments to the country’s interim constitution.
The opposition has accused the Federal Government of not being ready for serious talks, and has accused the president of wanting to stay in office, which they say could lead to political turmoil that could set the country back.
