The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration of Egypt, Dr. Badr Abdel Aati, attended the AU Peace and Security Council meeting held online on Tuesday, at Egypt’s request, to support the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
The Minister said that Israel’s recognition of the so-called “Somaliland” is a grave violation of the sovereignty and unity of Somalia, and is contrary to international law, the United Nations Charter, and the African Union’s founding charter. He noted that this move is a threat to regional and international peace and security, and that a united stance in support of Somalia is needed to ensure security and stability in Somalia and the Horn of Africa.
The Minister also stressed that it is unacceptable to remain silent about measures that threaten the stability of the continent, which are trying to create new political realities outside international law. He noted that Egypt fully supports the independence, unity, and territorial integrity of Somalia, which is an important pillar for stability in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea.
The Minister stated that Israel’s recognition could provoke conflicts and insecurity in the region, and that Israel is responsible for all the negative consequences that may result from this illegal decision.
During the meeting, the Minister detailed Egypt’s steps in support of Somalia’s independence following the announcement of this illegal step, as Egypt led extensive diplomatic efforts to find a unified international position, which culminated in an international statement issued by 23 countries and two international organizations.
The statement clearly condemned Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, and reiterated its full support for the independence and unity of Somalia, calling on the African Union to adopt a unified position to confront this illegal step and its negative consequences.
