The United Nations Security Council has approved a US-drafted resolution supporting President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan to stabilize Gaza, which would establish an international force and a transitional authority to manage the reconstruction of Gaza.

Somalia was among 13 countries that voted in favor of the resolution, without objecting, while Russia and China abstained.

The Somali Foreign Ministry has not yet commented on why it supported the resolution, but Somalia’s decision is part of the international push to implement the Gaza stabilization plan, which is being supported by many countries.

The resolution states that the ISF will work with Israel, Egypt and a specially trained Palestinian police force to secure the borders of Gaza and ensure the disarmament of non-state groups, including Hamas.

Also, a Board of Peace (BoP) is being established to manage the interim administration, reconstruction of Gaza, and humanitarian assistance, and will be funded by a fund sponsored by the World Bank.

Somalia voted in favor of the resolution, with other Muslim and Arab countries including Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Turkey clearly supporting its adoption, to encourage a permanent ceasefire and a political process leading to a Palestinian state.

The adoption of the resolution came as the UN said the plan needed to be translated into concrete steps on the ground.
