House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is under pressure to take action against Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) after she allegedly failed to repay a 2005 federal loan to pay for her education.
The American Accountability Foundation (AAF) says that the Democratic congresswoman has been delinquent on her loans for years and has tried to pressure the federal Department of Education to avoid paying them.
AAF President Tom Jones has sent a letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson, asking that Rep. Ilhan Omar’s salary be withheld and that she be paid directly to her creditors.
Jones wrote in his letter:
“We have serious concerns about Rep. Ilhan Omar’s failure to manage her debt.”
According to Ilhan Omar’s most recent financial filing, she owes between $15,000 and $50,000 in debt, which she took out in October 2005.
Jones said that if Ilhan Omar does not pay off the debt, the US taxpayer will pay for it, as it is a government debt.
“It’s outrageous that someone who makes $174,000 a year, like Rep. Omar, still can’t pay off her student loans,” Jones added.
The AAF also said it has received information that shows Ilhan Omar is using her political influence to intimidate the Department of Education.
Jones said his organization has filed a Freedom of Information Act request to obtain all of the correspondence and communications that Ilhan Omar shared with the Department of Education, to determine if there was any pressure or favoritism.
