The Governor of Banadir Region, Hassan Mohamed Hussein (Muungaab), today inspected the damaged Suuq Bacaad Market in Yaaqshiid district. The Governor voiced the urgent need to implement orderly roads that pass through the markets of the capital to control losses in emergencies such as what happened last night in Suuq Bacaad.

While at the site, Governor Muungaab clearly stated that the construction of roads is a security and safety plan, and should be seen as one that enhances the lives of traders and the public in general, and he noted that roads will be provided in this market to prevent further problems.

“The roads are not a plan to destroy the markets or loot people’s property. This is a measure aimed at public safety and facilitating the work of firefighting, health, and emergency response,” the Governor said.

The fire that broke out last night in Suuq Baaad caused widespread property damage. Many traders, like Shukri Geedi who said she lost $8,000, are still struggling to rebuild their businesses. A young girl was also missing, highlighting the need for roads that facilitate emergency vehicles in times of emergency.

Also, some traders said that the fire was caused by garbage in the market, while the district administration indicated that it was caused by an electrical fault, and an official investigation is underway.

It is expected that the regional and district administrations will work with traders to plan suitable roads for the markets, and Governor Muungaab noted that these projects will be carried out in full consultation with traders so as not to disrupt their lives and businesses.

“We must take advantage of the tragedy that has occurred, so that we can prevent similar ones in the future,” Governor Muungaab added.
