The Indian government has sent 10 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Somalia, in a show of support to the Somali people facing a difficult situation due to protracted conflict, climate change, and economic challenges.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed this on Saturday, posting on social media that the aid consists of essential medical supplies, including essential medicines, surgical equipment, hospital supplies, and modern medical equipment.
“India’s humanitarian assistance to the Somali people continues. 10 tonnes of aid including essential medicines, surgical equipment, hospital supplies, and medical equipment have been sent to Somalia,” the ministry said in a statement.
Currently, Somalia is facing the effects of La Nina, which is expected to continue until the last months of 2025. This has led to droughts and low rainfall, increasing food shortages, the risk of diseases such as cholera, and conflicts over water and pasture between communities.
Six million people are expected to require urgent humanitarian assistance. While food is the main need, half of the Somali population lacks clean water, and adequate shelter is difficult to find.
