The National Consultative Council issued a statement tonight after its meeting in Mogadishu, reaching a political understanding and cooperation on security issues and the country’s electoral process.
The Consultative Council agreed to support the fight against terrorism. It also stressed the need to fully support the Somali armed forces.
The Consultative Council agreed that the regional governments should work closely with the Electoral Commission to expedite voter registration. This step is important, as stated in the statement, for the holding of free and credible elections.
The Ministry of Interior was asked to prepare a legal proposal on how to best handle the situation in Jubbaland. The Consultative Council said that there is a need to find a legal mechanism to resolve the Jubbaland conflict.
On the other hand, the Consultative Council officially recognized SSC-Khaatumo as an official regional state within the Federal Government of Somalia. It was agreed to complete the SSC-Khatumo conference in accordance with the country’s constitution.
Although no major decisions were reached at the conference, Puntland and Jubbaland, two of the largest administrations in Somalia, were absent from the conference due to their differences with the Federal Government of Somalia.
