The United Nations Security Council has passed a draft resolution establishing the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
The 15 members of the council passed the draft resolution led by the UK, and 14 votes were approved, and the US government was silent.
AUSSOM will replace the African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), whose mandate ends on December 31.
The draft text allows the African Union (AU) to deploy up to 12,626 troops, including 1,040 police, to Somalia by 30 June 2025, and to complete by this date the restructuring of all AU forces that were formerly ATMIS. , to move to AUSSOM.
Ambassador James Kariuki, Deputy Permanent Representative of the UK to the United Nations, said that this resolution strongly reinforces the support given by the Council to Somalia.
“It authorizes AUSSOM to support Somalia in its fight against Al-Shabaab, strengthen efforts to stabilize Somalia, and enable the provision of humanitarian aid,” said Kariuki.
Somalia and Ethiopia both attended the session. The two countries have been at odds since Ethiopia signed an agreement with Somaliland in January to build a port on the Red Sea.
