Uganda Defense Force Commander General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who is the son of President Museveni, has demanded $100bn in compensation from the United States for the loss of Ugandan forces in Somalia.

Mohamed El-Amine Souef, the Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission in Somalia, told VOA that the ATMIS operation has recorded around 4,000 deaths, mostly soldiers from Burundi & Ganda.

“The United States has at least 100 billion dollars in our work in Somalia,” said Muhoozi.

The United States, which withdrew its troops from Somalia after the black incident in 1993 in which 18 Americans were killed, said the officer, who relied on Ugandan soldiers to achieve Washington’s goals in Mogadishu.

Hundreds of Ugandan soldiers have been killed in bloody battles to oust Al-Shabaab from the capital of Somalia, Mogadishu.

Muhoozi’s tweet comes at a time when relations between Uganda and the United States have deteriorated.

The United States has recently imposed sanctions on Ugandan officials, after the creation of the law to prevent what is known as LGPT, and the United States refused to invest in Uganda.

Washington also excluded Uganda from the African Growth Opportunities Agreement (AGOA) which gives sub-Saharan African countries duty-free access to US markets.
