The indirect talks between the delegations of Somalia and Ethiopia that were going on in Ankara, Turkey, have collapsed. The talks reportedly ended without any progress being made.

Reports say that a third meeting has been scheduled to be held in Ankara. It has not yet been confirmed the reasons that led to the failure to reach an agreement in the negotiations that Turkey was pushing behind.

Sources say that Ethiopia has once again insisted that it will not withdraw from the agreement it reached with the separatist administration of Somaliland, in order to enter Somali waters.

The delegation representing Somalia at the meeting led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Somalia, Ambassador Ahmed Macalin Fiqi, is reported to have stood firm in their position that they are not ready to engage in face-to-face negotiations with Ethiopia until Ethiopia withdraws from the agreement. January 2024.

Other reports we are receiving say that Ethiopia itself has argued that they should first sit down with Somalia and reach an agreement between the two of them which is a solution to have access to the Somali sea.

It is expected that the delegations of the two countries will issue a statement stating that the meeting will continue and there will be a third phase to meet.
