The Somaliland government said that Somalia can enter into an agreement with Ethiopia as long as it controls the sea, but it cannot provide water to Somaliland.
The Minister of Information, Culture and Awareness and the spokesperson of the Government of Ali Hassan Mohamed ‘Ali Marehaan’ who gave an interview to BBC Somali, said that the agreement entered into by the government of Somalia cannot be implemented in Somaliland.
“It is known that the Republic of Somaliland is not Somalia, they enter into many agreements with the Hamar group, and they have never implemented any agreement they made in Somaliland.” said Minister Ali Marehan.
The minister claimed that Somalia only wants to sign the agreement that Somaliland and Ethiopia have already shared, “This is a testimony to what we have said a lot that the government of Mogadishu wants to sign it”.
Somalia’s Minister of Information Daoud Awes, who is part of a delegation that will hold talks with Ethiopia today in Turkey, told BBC Somali that Ethiopia can only allow a trade agreement, a similar agreement between Djibouti and Ethiopia on the use of ports.
The agreement between Somaliland and Ethiopia, which created tension between the two countries, stated that Ethiopia should get a military base in Somaliland sea, and in return, Ethiopia should recognize Somaliland.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hankan Fidan said on Friday that the conflict between Ethiopia and Somalia can end with Somalia giving Ethiopia access to the sea, and Ethiopia respecting Somalia’s independence.
