Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Somali counterpart Hassan Sheikh Mohamud discussed the issues of the two countries, the region and the world as a whole, according to the Turkish Communications Authority.
“During the conversation, President Erdogan expressed the importance that Turkey gives to the territorial unity of Somalia,” said the press release of the communications office.
President Erdogan said that Somalia’s support in the fight against terrorism will continue, and Turkey will continue mediation efforts to resolve the conflict between Somalia and Ethiopia.
Relations between the two sides have worsened since Ethiopia signed a port agreement with the Somaliland administration on January 1.
President Erdogan said that bilateral cooperation in many fields, especially energy and defense will continue to move forward.
Recently, the Turkish parliament passed a motion for Turkey to send troops to Somali waters, as part of the defense cooperation between the two countries.
Somalia wants to help Turkey in the security of its sea, and in the construction of the Somali National Sea Guard.
