The Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics Company has announced that it has held talks with Chinese shipbuilding companies to purchase large ships.
Ethiopia has said that it wants to expand its maritime transport sector, to boost exports and economic activity in its country.
Representatives from the Ethiopian state shipping company held talks with shipping companies based in China.
Recently, the Ethiopian government has trained units of its navy, which it wants to be part of its plan to enter the Red Sea.
However, Ethiopia signed a maritime agreement with Somaliland in January this year, wanting to establish a commercial port and a military base in Somali waters.
Ethiopia said it is committed to the implementation of the maritime agreement, although the Somali government strongly opposes the agreement.
