Somalia’s Minister of Information Daoud Aweys said that the Executive Council of the African Union has approved Somalia as a candidate for the non-permanent seat of the Security Council 2025-2026.
The Minister of Information said this move reflects Africa’s confidence in Somalia and how Somalia is ready to play an important role in the world.
Somalia has said it is ready to lead Africa’s peace and security agenda at the UNSC.
Somalia will compete for this seat in the middle of 2024, during the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
If Somalia wins its bid, it will remain in office until 2026, which represents a unique opportunity for Somalia to influence international decisions.
