Units of the Indian Navy are being deployed in the strategic waters of Djibouti, the Gulf of Aden, the East Coast of Somalia as well as the North and the Arabian Sea.
The purpose of deploying the Indian forces there is to protect the commercial ships in view of the maritime security situation in the region according to the Ministry of Defense of India.
Minister of State for Defense Ajay Bhatt said in the Lok Sabha that the naval forces are operating in the Gulf of Adam and the East coast of Africa to fight against pirates.
In recent weeks, Indian warships have succeeded in rescuing foreign ships and fishermen who have been kidnapped by Somali pirates, who wanted to ransom them.
There has been growing international concern over Iran-backed Houthi militias attacking various merchant ships in the Red Sea since November.
The Houthi attacks appear to be a response to Israel’s military offensive in Gaza.
