The United Nations Office in Somalia (UNSOM) has congratulated the government and the people of Somalia for their great success in becoming an official member of the EAC.

The press release issued by UNSOM said, “It is a victory for Somalia that reflects its return to the international community and the recovery of its dignity.”

Somalia has won the membership of the East African Community (EAC) which it officially joined yesterday, as announced at a meeting held in Arusha, Tanzania, which is the headquarters of this organization.

President Hassan Sheikh said that he has been working hard since 2016 to join this umbrella, “as it is an opportunity for the Somali people to find an international market, business opportunities and easy travel.”

Somalia is the 8th country to become a member of the EAC, joining Burundi, Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Uganda, and Tanzania.
