The Speaker of the Federal Parliament of Somalia, Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur Madobe, who chaired a meeting of the People’s Assembly today, spoke strongly about the MPs who did not attend the Assembly sessions.

Chairman Sheikh Adan Madobe said that 130 MPs do not attend every session of the People’s Assembly, and that it is not acceptable for MPs to be absent without permission.

“There are 275 MPs in the House of Representatives, 145 MPs come to the sessions while another 130 are absent and most of them have no excuse or permission. Correct that statement, but we should have said it and be accountable,” said Governor Sheikh Adan Madobe.

Sheikh Adan Madobe also said that the by-laws of the House of People will be implemented to punish MPs who habitually do not attend the sessions of the Assembly, noting that the by-laws stipulate that the MP who is absent from the sessions of the Assembly without permission for a period of two years will lose his position as a Member of Parliament.

This statement by the chairman of the House of Representatives comes as many times the meetings of the House of Representatives have been called without a quorum, as most of the members of the House of Representatives have not attended.
