The United Nations Committee in charge of arms embargo and export of coal, said that the Government of Somalia destroyed the country’s coal reserves, in order to enforce the directives of the Security Council to ban the export of coal.
In a report issued by this committee, they said that they recently received a letter from the Somali government regarding the destruction of coal reserves.
The committee also said they have updated recommendations on procedures and requirements related to the inspection of ships suspected of transporting coal from Somalia, or the seizure of coal suspected of originating from Somalia.
On the other hand, the arms embargo committee in Somalia spoke about the request made by the Security Council to Somalia’s envoy to the United Nations, Abukar Osman Baalle, who asked for the arms embargo to be lifted from Somalia.
The chairman of the sanctions committee, who was giving a report to the security council, said that he is in the second informal consultation, regarding the renewal of the arms embargo in Somalia.
These sanctions, he said, include preventing the actions of al-Shabaab and other actors who threaten the peace, security and stability of Somalia.
The Sanctions Committee on the other hand praised the Government’s efforts to weaken al-Shabaab; the implementation of arms embargoes, including the way the government controls its weapons and the enforcement of the coal export ban.
