President William Ruto has praised the progress made by the East African Community since its establishment nearly 25 years ago.
However, he said it is time to revise the agreement to adapt to modern changes.
He said that the EAC started with three members consisting of Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, but since then it has become 7 members.
The countries that joined the regional organization when it was established are Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
“Somalia is likely to join once the assessment is completed. There is also the possibility that Ethiopia and Sudan can join the EAC,” said the Kenyan President.
Speaking during a meeting with the Speaker of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), Mr Joseph Nkakirutimana, at the Presidential Palace in Nairobi, President Ruto indicated that the organization must therefore build sufficient capacity to need a large regional organization.
“It is time to review the agreement, especially the languages used in EALA. Of course, Kiswahili will continue to play a major role in the council,” said the Kenyan President.
