The Oromo opposition organization in Ethiopia (OLF) has expressed strong concern over the tension between Ethiopia and Somalia, after the government of Ethiopia and Somaliland signed a memorandum of understanding.

“We call for calm and understanding on all sides, urging respect for refugees and civilians on both sides during these sensitive times,” said a statement from the party’s Foreign Relations Office.

The Oromo Association said that the events between the two governments have hurt Oromo refugees and civilians in both countries.

This statement was followed by increasing calls and agitations spread on social media to expel Ethiopian citizens, especially the Oromo, from Somalia.

The party urged the international community, and all neighboring countries to intervene before major damage befalls the region.

The signing of the Agreement, which allowed Ethiopia to have access to the sea so that Somaliland could get international recognition, caused anger in Somalia as a whole.

On January 6, 2024, the President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, signed a law revoking the agreement.
