The Minister of Internal Affairs of Somalia, Ahmed Macalin Fiqi, said in June of next year that the district governors of Banadir region will be elected in public elections.
The Minister of Internal Affairs said that the Banadir region will be the place where the public elections will be held, adding that they will be followed by the South West regions.
“We want governors and a local council to be accountable to the people,” said Minister Fiqi.
Fiqi said that Banadir region should be an example of Somalia’s democracy, although he said that there are challenges in terms of land disputes.
He pointed out that the Somali government will do its best to resolve the land disputes, which he pointed out have been going on since the time of the Revolutionary government.
He said Mogadishu’s stability lies in having a local council elected by the people.
