Maalim Alim Jones, 32, pleaded guilty in court to support him, including al-Shabaab militants in the country. Somalia.
Magistrate Paul Paul Gardephe in Manhattan, Mauritania, said Jones had pleaded guilty to having a AK-47 assault weapon while in Al Shabaab, and said he had been training with al-Shabaab fighters.
“I knew that my actions were violated by the laws of the United States,” Jones said.
Prosecutors say Jone was born and lived in Maryland and traveled to Kenya in 2011 and then went to Somalia, where he trained with the al-Shabaab group and all these crimes were prosecuted in 2016.
Western governments are monitoring their citizens traveling to Kenya and Somalia, and they believe that they can be at risk of harming their own country.
