The UK Government has opened applications for Chevening Scholarships for the 2027/2028 academic year, which offer Somali professionals the opportunity to undertake a fully-funded master’s degree at top UK universities.
The programme aims to develop the knowledge, skills and global connections of emerging leaders, so they can contribute to the development of Somalia and address shared global challenges. Since Chevening was launched in Somalia, more than 100 Somalis have been awarded the scholarship, joining a global network of over 60,000 professionals.
The UK Ambassador to Somalia, Charles King, said that Somalia’s greatest asset is its people, noting that Chevening provides an opportunity for talented Somalis to gain a world-class education, expand their professional networks, and then return home with knowledge and experience to support Somalia’s future. He also encouraged eligible individuals from all regions of Somalia to apply for the scholarship.
Emma Hennessey, Head of Scholarships at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), said the programme was looking for individuals with leadership potential who were ready to work with the UK to build a resilient, prosperous and sustainable future. She added that Chevening promotes diversity and the participation of underrepresented groups.
Applications for the scholarships opened on 4 August and will close on 6 October 2026. Interested candidates are asked to submit their applications on the official Chevening website, having first reviewed the criteria and application guidelines.
The Chevening programme, established in 1983, has so far supported more than 60,000 professionals from around the world, demonstrating the UK’s long-standing commitment to developing future leaders.
