One of Somalia’s largest telecommunications companies, Hormuud Telecom, has accused Kenyan forces of destroying one of its key mobile phone network facilities, located in the Lower Juba region.

The company said the destruction caused widespread disruption to essential telecommunications and financial services that thousands of Somali citizens rely on.

According to the company, the facility in the village of Dhuuyac-Garoon was destroyed on January 14, 2026, the same location that was previously targeted in a similar incident on January 21, 2019.

“We regret to inform our customers and the wider Somali community that Kenyan government forces have once again deliberately destroyed the company’s telecommunications equipment,” the company said in a press release.

The company added that the incident caused significant service and financial losses, directly affecting between 20,000 and 30,000 people living in the village of Dhuuyac-Garoon and surrounding areas.

“People living in Dhuuyac-Garoon and its surrounding areas have completely lost the telecommunications and financial services they used to receive from the company,” the statement said.

Reports indicate that the facility was destroyed by landmines, and that Kenyan troops were accused of illegally crossing the border, and were not part of a force legally operating inside Somalia.

The company, which was established more than two decades ago, is Somalia’s largest telecommunications operator, as well as the country’s largest private employer.
