The Ugandan government is deploying new troops to Somalia in the coming days to join the African Union Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
The Deputy Commander of the Ugandan Army, Major General Francis Takirwa, has spoken to a new contingent of Ugandan soldiers who will soon be deployed to Somalia to join the African Union Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
During a briefing for the troops, Gen. Takirwa called on the soldiers to uphold the principles of African unity, discipline, and patriotism while on the peacekeeping mission in Somalia.
“You must always promote the unity and morality of African communities, focusing on patriotism and defending the interests of your country,” said Major General Francis Takirwa.
He stressed that the deployment of the troops is part of efforts to strengthen peace and stability in Somalia, and to prevent terrorist attacks by Al-Shabaab fighters.
Uganda remains the largest troop contributor to AUSSOM, and its troops operate mainly in southern Somalia, where they play a key role in peacekeeping, stabilization, and counter-terrorism.
