Prof. Yahya Amir has strongly criticized the Cabinet’s decision on the division of districts in Mogadishu, describing it as completely illegitimate and contrary to the federal system established in Somalia.
Prof. Yahya, who spoke on the matter in a statement, said that the Cabinet is a legitimate institution that he recognizes, but cannot support any mistake in knowledge, oppression or intention, as he put it.
“The division of districts A & B is not the responsibility of the national Cabinet, and it would have been correct if it had come from the Mogadishu Local Government,” said Prof. Yahya.
He added that the Cabinet’s action was “against the principle of federalism agreed upon by the Somali clans” and paved the way for “preventing the people of Mogadishu from having an independent administration.”
Prof. Yahya pointed out that the “One Person and One Vote” system has become a threat to the future of the capital’s administration, as he said “the blade of the knife is held to stab people.”
He also underlined that he will not personally participate in the One Person One Vote election in Mogadishu, although he is exercising his right as a citizen to vote at the national level.
Finally, Prof. Yahya Amir called on the Cabinet to reverse this decision, saying that “this decision is a denial of the rights of Somali citizens.”
