The Federal Parliament of Somalia has formally approved the Human Rights Commission, chaired by the Minister of Family Affairs, Khadija Mohamed Al Makhzoumi. In today’s meeting, which was attended by a large number of MPs, the commission received 142 votes in favor, one abstention, and no objections were recorded.

During the parliamentary meeting, Minister Khadija Al Makhzoumi strongly stressed the importance of completing the commission, saying that the international community had been eagerly awaiting this important step, which is part of the progress being made in the field of human rights in the country.

She thanked the Somali Parliamentarians for their overwhelming support in the session they convened today.

However, some MPs openly expressed their concerns before the vote, raising questions about the process of selecting the commission members and the transparency of the related activities.

The approval of this committee is considered an important step towards strengthening human rights institutions, as Somalia seeks to align itself with international standards related to the protection of citizens’ rights.
