The Government of Somalia, a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, has officially welcomed the signing of the agreement between the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the M23 armed group.
The agreement, signed in Doha, Qatar, is an important step in efforts to restore peace and stability to the eastern region of the DRC, which has been plagued by armed conflict and humanitarian crises for a long time.
The Federal Government of Somalia particularly commended the important role played by the Government of Qatar in facilitating these talks, expressing its commitment to the success of ongoing peace efforts in the region.
“Somalia fully supports the people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and their efforts to achieve peace, stability and sustainable development,” said a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Somalia.
Somalia also urged all parties to work towards the full implementation of the agreement, and to continue dialogue and understanding, in order to secure lasting peace among all parties involved in the conflict in the DRC and in the Great Lakes region as a whole.
The Federal Republic of Somalia reiterated its commitment to supporting regional and international efforts to promote stability, peace and sustainable development in Africa, the ministry concluded.
