At least two civilians have been confirmed dead and many more injured after a landmine exploded in their vehicle.
The Kenyan troops were targeted by a landmine explosion on the road between Ijara and Bodhai in Garissa County, northeastern Kenya, and the Al-Shabaab group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The two civilians killed in the explosion have been identified as Mohamed Shabeel Bashir and Abdikadir Mohamud Salad, who were reportedly heading to Bodhai, a town in Garissa County.
Bodhai County Commissioner Dubat Mohamed told the media that the landmine appeared to have targeted security convoys that regularly operate on the road.
“It is a sad incident and we believe that the attack was targeted at security forces who often travel along this road. Our forces are investigating suspicious areas and we appeal to the public to cooperate with us and report any information they have,” said Commissioner Dubat Mohamed.
This latest landmine explosion that killed and injured civilians comes after a similar landmine explosion that caused various casualties last week targeted a Kenyan military base in Mandera town in northeastern Kenya.
