Civil servants in the Puntland government are facing a severe shortage of salaries, having not received any salary for four months in 2025.
Some of the employees who spoke to Media told them that they only received their February salary this year, which was paid in March. This means that they have been working without any salary for the last four months.
Not only that, the combined unpaid period of civil servants in Puntland since last year has reached 10 months.
The ongoing lack of salaries has had a significant impact on the work of government institutions, with many offices stalled or operating slowly. This also comes at a time when the Puntland administration has already stopped new recruitment since last year.
The decision was made following an order issued by the Puntland President, after it was discovered that some ministers in his government were secretly adding members of their families to the list of government employees.
The Puntland Finance Minister, who was questioned by parliament about the non-payment of salaries for government employees, attributed the situation to an economic downturn, saying that the annual budget subsidy that Puntland received from the World Bank had been reduced.
This comes at a time when international organizations operating in Puntland were also laying off hundreds of their employees after financial support was cut from the organizations they were working with.
