The European Union (EU) has launched the Green Energy and Economic Development (GEED) Programme in Mogadishu, a large-scale initiative to promote access to clean energy and sustainable economic growth.
The programme, funded by the EU, the German government and other partners with €47.5 million, focuses on increasing access to renewable energy in Somalia, particularly for households, small and medium-sized enterprises.
GEED consists of five projects that promote market development, build local capacities through skills training, reduce risks for private investment, and address legal, economic and environmental barriers to development.
The EU Ambassador to Somalia, Karin Johansson, said, “Renewable energy and green growth are priorities that we share with the Federal Government of Somalia. They are essential for sustainable development, poverty reduction, and peacebuilding.”
The event was attended by the Minister of Energy and Water Resources, Abdullahi Bidhaan Warsame, members of the Council of Ministers, directors general, representatives of partner agencies and other stakeholders.
