The Federal Government of Somalia has welcomed the decision of the United Nations Security Council to turn the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) into a transitional mission.

The United Nations Security Council has unanimously adopted Resolution 2753 (2024), which renames the United Nations Office for Somalia (UNSOM) to the United Nations Interim Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS).

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Somalia submitted this proposal in August, which resulted from extensive negotiations between the Federal Government of Somalia and UNSOM.

The resolution was submitted to UN Secretary-General António Guterres after much deliberation.

The Somali government sees this transition as an important diplomatic victory for Somalia, which is a symbol of a step towards autonomy and independence in political and national security matters.
