Some members of the House of Representatives strongly opposed a recent decision by the parliamentary committee, which prohibits members of parliament from holding a press conference or press interview.
MP Abdirisaaq Eid, one of the members of the House of Representatives, said that this decision is aimed at suppressing the press, accusing it of being a step behind the Somali Presidency.
“It has come to our attention that it is forbidden to talk to the radio stations in front of the parliament. It is not possible and it has nothing to do with us. We speak for the people who have complaints, we are not happy to be suppressed,” said MP Eid.
MP Eid also said that the Somali Presidency is directly integrated into the parliament, stressing that MPs have the right to be independent to talk to the media and talk about what is wrong.
On the other hand, the Speaker of the Parliament responded to this issue by saying that the MPs who have a debate on this decision should come to his office to discuss it.
This issue has caused a lot of controversy and questions about how to control the freedom of the media and the opinion of MPs in the parliament.
