The former speaker of the parliament of South West administration, and now a member of parliament of the lower house, Dr Ali Saeed Faqi said that there are reports that the government of Somalia is demanding Fawzia H. Adam to give up her candidacy for the chairmanship of the African Union Commission.
Dr. Ali Saeed Faqi said, if the news is true, it will be very sad because it will be a big loss for Somalia as he said.
“The role of the AUC chairman carries great influence, and it is not only useful for the country but also enhances our national status,” said Faqi.
Faqi said that the chairmanship of the African Union will give Somalia the opportunity to play a leading role in the African Union and help shape the organization’s agenda and policy.
Also, he said that Somalia will allow it to have a big voice in the affairs of the region and to have a platform to discuss the issues that are important to Somalia and the entire African continent.
He advised the Somali government to think before taking such a decision.
His speech coincided with the Kenyan government working to convince Somalia to withdraw from the race for the seat of the African Union, so that the leader of the Kenyan opposition, Raila Odinga, who is being promoted by the Kenyan government, has a better chance.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Somalia, Ahmed Macallin Fiqi, has recently ruled out that Somalia is withdrawing from the competition, but the Kenyan media reports that Kenya is still trying to convince Somalia to give up the competition for that seat.
Candidates for the chairmanship of the African Union Commission are expected to submit their applications in August this year, with the election due at the beginning of the new year 2025.
