Somaliland has hired international companies to help it reach its position on the final agreement with Ethiopia.
As published by the German media, DW, quoting an informed source in Somaliland, said that a technical team appointed by President Muse Bihi Abdi has submitted the recommendations agreed upon by Ethiopia.
The team, which includes international private law firms and Somaliland lawyers, has begun working on finalizing the agreement.
Somaliland is said to have presented three possible sites that it will rent from Ethiopia, in order to establish a military base and a commercial port.
“The names of the three places we are thinking about are not being revealed, but it is something that will be decided together with the Ethiopian counterpart,” said Somaliland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Isse Kayd.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia said that as soon as they sign the agreement on the naval base and all the related conditions, that Ethiopia will announce the recognition of Somaliland.
The Somali government has already rejected the maritime agreement between Somaliland and Ethiopia, describing it as an illegal agreement that is against the independence and sovereignty of Somalia.
Ethiopia, which has faced international pressure in this agreement, said that it is insisting on the implementation of the agreement.
