The occasion of 18 May, the 33rd anniversary of Somaliland’s declaration of independence in 1991, was widely celebrated throughout Somaliland.

After a few days where the people of Somaliland held a series of celebrations in the big cities, this morning most of the towns in Somaliland celebrated the 18th of May.

The President of Somaliland, Muse Bihi Abdi, opposition leaders and various officials, attended the commemoration of May 18 in Hargeisa this morning.

“Somaliland is not a region that is seceding from the country as Africa fears. Everyone admits that we are two countries united. In the report of the African Union in 2005, they said that Somaliland is different from other African affairs,” said President Bihi.

The former President of Somaliland, Dahir Riyale Kaahin, who also spoke on the occasion, called on the people of Somaliland for unity and togetherness on the occasion of the 33rd anniversary of Somaliland.

The occasion of 18 May was also celebrated in most of the regions and districts of Somaliland, and the different areas were dispersed by government officials.
