The former Federal Parliament of Somalia elected Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur ‘Jaamac’ as the new Speaker of Parliament.

MP Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur Jama has been elected as the Speaker of the House of the People of the Federal Parliament of Somalia, following an election held today at the House of the People headquarters in Mogadishu.

The Acting Speaker and First Deputy Speaker of the House of the People, Saadiya Yasin Haji Samatar, announced the results of the vote.

According to the official results announced, 174 MPs attended today’s session, and the votes were received by Abdulqadir Omar Moallin: 30 votes and Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur Jama who received 142 votes and 2 invalid votes.

Thus, Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur Jama won the position of Speaker of the House of the People, receiving a majority of the votes cast.

This election came after the position of Speaker of the House of the People became vacant, when Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur (Adan Madoobe) was elected President of South West Somalia. The election of the new speaker was one of the most important items on the agenda of the House of the People in its eighth session.

Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur Jama was the Minister of Ports and Maritime Transport of the Federal Government of Somalia, a position he held since March 2025.

He has also previously served as the Minister of Defense and the Minister of Justice, and previously served as a senior advisor to the Office of the Speaker of the House of the People.

During his election campaign, and in his speech today at the House of the People, Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur Jama said that his candidacy program is based on five main pillars, including holding the executive branch of government accountable and continuously monitoring it.

He pledged that the House of the People would closely monitor the activities of government agencies in the country, stressing the importance of holding the executive branch accountable and accountable to parliament.

This could be particularly important in Somalia’s political climate, as the House of the People faces serious issues including security, elections, the constitution, and relations between government agencies.

Following the announcement of the results, 1st Deputy Speaker Saadiya Yasin Haji Samatar summoned Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur Jama to be sworn in, officially marking the beginning of his new duties as Speaker of the House of the People of the Federal Parliament of Somalia.
