The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) will hold an emergency meeting on the situation in Iran on Thursday, a spokeswoman for the Permanent Mission of Somalia to the United Nations said.
Somalia currently holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council for the month of January.
“I can now confirm that the President of the Security Council plans to hold a briefing on the situation in Iran on Thursday, 15 January 2026, at 3:00 pm (2000 GMT), at the request of the United States,” said Khadija Ahmed, spokeswoman for the Somali mission.
Violent protests have erupted in several cities in Iran, amid a worsening economic situation and a sharp drop in the value of the Iranian rial.
Reports of the death toll vary widely. Some sources say that at least 48 security forces and 483 protesters have died, while other sources estimate the death toll to be more than 2,000.
US President Donald Trump has warned Iranian officials that if protesters are violently suppressed, the US will intervene to support them and take strong action against Iran.
Trump later said that he had been told by reliable sources that the killings had stopped and that executions would be suspended. However, he warned that if executions or death sentences were resumed, it would result in a response from the United States.
Speaking to Fox News, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi blamed the high number of casualties on the actions of what he described as Israeli-armed terrorists.
