The Somali Federal Government’s Cabinet has officially cancelled or terminated all agreements with the UAE in Somalia.
The agreements that the Somali Government has cancelled or terminated include agreements with the UAE in the ports of Bosaso, Berbera and Kismayo in Somaliland, Puntland and Jubbaland.
A press release from the Somali Cabinet meeting, which was an emergency meeting, confirmed that the security and defense agreements entered into by the two governments have been withdrawn from Somalia.
The Somali Cabinet explained this decision as being related to the UAE’s violation of the unity of the Somali nation.
“This decision is related to reports and strong evidence of malicious actions that are threatening the sovereignty, national unity and political independence of the country,” the Somali Cabinet said in a press release.
The press release from the Council of Ministers also stated that this decision was taken in accordance with the general interest of the Federal Government of Somalia, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Somalia has been instructed to implement these decisions made by the Council of Ministers of Somalia.
Meanwhile, Somaliland has opposed the decision of the Somali Cabinet, which excluded Somaliland from the UAE government, and annulled all agreements with the UAE.
Somaliland’s Minister of the Presidency Khadar Hussein Abdi, in a statement published on X, said that the Somali government’s decision to expel the port of Berbera from the UAE-owned company DP World is a daydream that will not be possible.
“Somalia’s daydreams will not change anything. Berbera is the birthplace of the President of Somaliland, and the UAE is a trusted friend of Somaliland,” said Minister Khadar.
He said that the UAE invested in Berbera at a time when other governments were skeptical, which is why the world is talking about Berbera today. “Somaliland is a principled nation, and its friends stand by it. The UAE will stay, no matter what the weak administration in Mogadishu says.”
