The Indian government has reaffirmed its commitment to preserving the territorial integrity of Somalia, distancing itself from growing regional moves to recognize Somaliland.
In a press statement on Friday, Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said New Delhi respects Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“India has a longstanding relationship with Somalia. We have always stressed the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country,” Jaiswal told reporters, responding to questions about the self-proclaimed administration.
The statement comes amid heightened diplomatic tensions in the Horn of Africa, following Israel’s decision late last year to recognize Somaliland.
Somalia, which currently holds the presidency of the United Nations Security Council, has vowed to take all necessary legal measures to defend its borders.
India has aligned itself with the majority of the international community and the African Union’s position that borders established during the post-colonial era cannot be touched.
