More information is available on an operation by the Somali National Army to thwart landmine explosions prepared by Al-Shabaab in areas of the Lower Shabelle region.
This operation was carried out by troops from the 7th Brigade of the 12th April Division, who destroyed landmine explosion sites prepared by the group in the Afgooye district, especially in the areas of Omar Beere, Fay Yusuf and Osman Dhure, all under the Afgooye district of the Lower Shabelle region.
The Deputy Commander of the 7th Brigade, Lieutenant Colonel Mohamed Abdullahi Caraaye, known as Foo-Foo, who led the operation, revealed that the troops destroyed many mines planted by Al-Shabaab on important roads used by civilians.
“The army detonated landmines planted by the Khawarij for the civilians, while the brave soldiers are pursuing the enemy’s retreat,” said the deputy commander of the 7-7th Brigade, Lieutenant Colonel Mohamed Abdullahi Caraaye Foo-Foo.
Commander Foo-Foo also said that the troops had destroyed the places and centers where the group was collecting ransom from the civilians living in the areas below Afgooye district, and noted that the operation caused various casualties among Al-Shabaab members.
This operation is coming, as in recent days government forces and AUSSOM forces in the Lower Shabelle region have increased operations against Al-Shabaab militants in that region.
