The Government of Djibouti has reiterated its commitment to supporting peace and stability in Somalia, announcing plans to deploy additional troops to counter the persistent threats posed by the Al-Shabaab group.
Djibouti’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Mohamed Siad Doualeh, made the announcement in a speech to the UN General Assembly. He said that Djibouti welcomes the progress made by the Somali government in security and institution-building, but that security challenges remain that need to be addressed together.
The Representative stressed the importance of strengthening support for the African Union Mission in Somalia.
He also announced the signing of a bilateral agreement between Djibouti and Somalia, which provides for Djibouti to deploy additional troops to contribute to efforts to stabilize the country.
The Djibouti representative also called on the international community to jointly support the Somali government to eradicate terrorist acts targeting civilians and national security forces, which also hinder the delivery of humanitarian aid.
